Accent Furniture

Use the Essentials Reflective Ottoman as an accent piece of furniture to add a touch or color and pattern to the room. It's also a useful piece of furniture for seating to put on shoes (who doesn't love looks and function?) Not to mention, very on trend today.

Hang the Piper Round Mirror set above the bed or over a chest for a fun take on mirrors and to add a golden metallic touch to the room that guests will love. We love the fun shapes and this modern twist coupled with the more traditional bed.

Every room needs multiple lamps and can't you just see a pair of these on either side of the bed. Add a touch of glamour to this beautiful upscale room with a pair of these Silvertone Glass Mercury Lamps.

A pair of lamps of course need a pair of tables!  Let your lamps shine upon a gorgeous pair of tables with the Parma Side Table. We're just crazy about these pieces and love mixing metals and styles.  This is what adds personality to any room.

New Arrivals

Announcing New Coastal Décor Arrivals!

We can’t believe it is May 1st already and spring is here finally after that very long winter.  We’ve been busy adding new products we believe you’ll love to our online boutique and they’re just in time for the spring gift-giving season.  After all folks, Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10th – yes, that is NEXT SUNDAY.  And of course, if you’re anything like us, your mailbox is filling up with graduation and wedding invitations, not to mention those birthdays in May!  There are plenty of reasons to be buying gifts and we think you’ll love our new additions!

We’ve found some lovely new hand-crafted items for the kitchen from a couple of new vendors.  We’re just in love with the hand painted linens, trays and art from artist Leslie Flanagan.  Her colorful and whimsical interpretations of coastal creatures are so cute!  They make a perfect gift for many on your list.  Whether you’re looking for cocktail napkins, dinner napkins, or kitchen towels – you’ll love the pop of color and whimsy these linens provide.  They’re wonderful gifts for Mom, brides and the cocktail napkins are a perfect hostess gift!

Memorial Day will be here before you know it and this collection is perfect for patriotic holidays!

If linens aren’t your thing, we also love the new collection of hand crafted cutting boards we’ve added.  They are hand cut, sculpted, sanded and oil cured from the finest hand selected solid 1” thick red oak.  These shapes are so creative and the boards are perfect to use for chopping but pretty enough to serve off of as well!

House By The Shore has lots of gifts options for many different occasions.  Be sure to check out all we have to offer!

Make Everyone Green With Envy

Add Accents in Shades of Green to your Coastal Home

House by the Shore wants to celebrate bright and dark green accents in honor of spring. Pantone Spring 2015 has 3 shades of green that are perfect for spring coastal homes but also year-round for year round living.  Because green is the color of nature and it has a strong emotional tie to safety, it is a good color to use in homes.

You can add fresh bright accents in Lucite green, dark green accents in Treetop, or more neutral colored green accents in Woodbine.

Lucite Green is a bright and fresh airy color similar to mint. It’s a relaxing and soothing color that can add a punch of color to any room. Pair it with corals, blues, or silver/grays for a coastal feel.

Treetop green is a dark natural green just like the leaves on a palm tree. Use treetop as a background color for accent colors such as neutrals, browns, dusky blues, and grays.

Woodbine is the shade of green to act as a neutral and add a tropical edge to any Coastal home. Colors such as lavender, silvers, browns, blues, and almost anything work with this natural neutral color of yellow-green.

Beach Chic

Worried about being kitchy when you want beach chic?

How do you avoid the pitfalls that take your décor into the land of kitch?  What is kitch you ask – think pink flamingos and tacky lighthouses.  The pitfall is never intentional it is just so easy to get caught up in the tide.  Par the pun.  It all seems great when you look at it in the store but when you get it home and all in one place you end up crossing the line into kitch land.  Why?  Most of the time, it is simply too much.  You’ve gone from 1 or 2 items that were fine to 7 or 8 and it went too far.

We thought we’d offer up some advice that House By The Shore lives by.  First of all – exercise restraint.  While the fun crab nightlight, lamp and towels look really cute, you might do better just choosing one of them so that it stands out and makes a statement – the right statement that is.  When you get too many it all blurs together and loses impact in your décor.

Think about color choices.  Now many will recommend going with bright whites and keeping it all neutral.  We don’t believe that is what you have to do.  Take this pretty dining room we found on Decoist.com.

The walls are painted a beautiful navy.  White ceiling, cream rug and dark finish furniture.  The white slipcovered arm chairs at either end of the table lighten the look of the dark wood.  The rattan blinds carry the dark finish of the wood to the windows and the white draperies soften and add light. The brass chandelier adds the perfect hint of sparkle. The key to this room is that it is balanced.  Light and dark work together beautifully.  The room has a nautical feel simply with the navy and white but nothing is overdone.

This brings us to our next tip – don’t overdue the nautical.  We hinted at that above but it deserves to be stated again.  This dining room could have been overdone with a ships wheel chandelier, model ships on the table and upholstery festooned with anchors.  See where we’re going here?  You want a chic, calming space to dine – not to feel like you walked into the local seafood tourist trap restaurant.
Think about textures – we love to see rough-hewn wood combined with some sparkle from shiny metals or glass.  Take this room for example from Décor 4 All.  The rattan coffee table and the rough wood of the end table give depth to the light white walls and slipcovered sofa.  The sisal carpeting gives texture as well.  The sparkle from the glass jars and the mirror help to balance it all out.

Use fabric, finishes and patterns to give a nautical, coastal feel without taking things too far.  For example natural linens not only look great in coastal décor but they’re extremely well suited for beach living.  So are heavy cotton twill or denim slipcovers.  Use stripes and patterns that reflect the nature around you.  Pillows with pretty sea life patterns and stripes can look nautical without being overbearing as you can see here with this pretty combination from House By The Shore.

Choose wisely and practice self-restraint – that’s the key to having beach chic décor!

Stylish & Sophisticated Coastal Decor

Sophisticated Coastal Décor – Nautical prep isn’t the only way to go!

You’re lucky enough to have a house by the shore and you want to show it off.  You want it to be beautifully decorated and a comfortable place to live and entertain guests.  But the typical nautical prep style just isn’t you!  Don’t worry; it isn’t the only way to go.  If you’re personal style is a little more polished you have plenty of choices to have a stunning home full of stylish and sophisticated coastal décor.

Photo of entry from Benjamin Moore PaintsAt House by the Shore, we believe sophisticated coastal décor can be summed up as classic design with little hints of glamour thrown in.  It doesn’t mean you won’t see shells and coral in the plan but it does mean they will be a little more understated than you might find in other design styles.  This style of design is full of light and soothing.  You’ll see clean lines, lots of neutral colors – whites, creams, tans.  Basically think of the nature around you - any color you see out your window can be used in this style of decorating.  Blues, greens and even coral can be used.  If you’re at a loss for choosing a paint color and aren’t sure of the way to go, we really like Benjamin Moore’s Color Trends 2014.  They even showcase how these beautiful colors can be used together and if you didn’t believe us about how you can even use coral in these scheme.  Just look at the entryway image of the Historic Charleston Townhouse.

Keeping your color scheme neutral with paint colors and large pieces of furniture sets the stage for a sophisticated decorating style.  Then you can add pops of concentrated color to make the design pop.  A little glitz and glamour with some sparkle like the mirror above the console in the historic Charleston townhouse and the accent pieces on it.  Just picture lovely bright coral pillows on a neutral tan sofa – the pattern of these pillows is actually jellyfish and while echoing your surroundings it isn’t overbearing nautical.  You could use the coral bowls on an accent table or bookcase to continue carrying the coral color throughout the room without making it overbearing.

Sophisticated and elegant coastal design shouldn’t be intimidating.  Just keep in mind the tenets of classic and understated.  Don’t be afraid to add the pop to make your design stand out.
