Essential Things For An Outdoor Buffet

House by the Shore loves entertaining and we feel the 4th of July is a great occasion to celebrate with family & friends.  Many of you will be entertaining outdoors so we wanted to share some tips for your outdoor gathering.

A Buffet is a versatile way to serve a small or large crowd, it requires that guests serve themselves in a logical sequence. Each dish should have a serving utensil next to it and portions should be pre-cut for individual servings, foods that require a knife should only be served at a seated buffet. Avoid foods that run or melt to avoid a messy plate. Always serve beverages in a separate area from the food and have separate sections for alcoholic & non-alcoholic beverages. If you are low on serving containers try using these for dips & sauces: hollowed out bread, eggplant, red or green bell peppers and squash, serves for an easy clean up too. Some simple garnish ideas are broccoli florets, dill, cilantro and parsley sprigs, lemon, lime and orange wedges, notched cucumber rounds and basil leaves. For Desserts we opt to do cupcakes, pies or cakes that are colorfully decorated.

DECORATIONS
Decorations set the mood for an occasion and we feel it should be reflected throughout the house too. Flowers, balloons, party favors, ribbons and flags add flair to a party. For the buffet table we like the idea of rolling the utensils in a napkin tied with a red & blue ribbon and place them in a basket towards the end of the buffet. A beautiful and festive centerpiece would be a large vase or bucket filled with flags & white flowers. Visit our pinterest boards for more ideas and recipes.

Tips to Throwing a Summer Party

House by the Shore loves a good summer party and entertaining friends and family. Whether you are on the coast or bringing the coast home, no one hates a party with coastal flair or seafood but  it isn’t always easy to pull off. These tips below will help you set up and throw the best coastal party of the summer!

  • Choose a Theme: Coastal or nautical - you can also be more specific like yachting or anchors. This helps you define the night and create fun activities and an aura around you and guests with your décor.

  • Set a Smart Table: Patterned table clothes hide stains better than solid colors, while stacking plates and dishes on different levels will help to keep bugs away from food. Outlining tables with citronella candles will also help to keep mosquitoes away and guests more comfortable.

  • Music: Interesting tip – start with the music louder and turn it lower as more people arrive so people don’t shout over it as much, especially since usually the opposite happens.

  • Have plenty of seating. Arrange for seating both inside and outside so that your guests can mingle in the air conditioning and the summer breeze. Set up your furniture so people can sit for conversations in groups that aren’t too large or too small.

  • Pick a simple classic menu that keeps guests happy but easy for you. Offer a couple different entrees like grilled chicken and a seafood dish such as, grilled salmon with avocado salsa, with several side dishes to accompany them. Just don’t forget dessert! You can always do something fun and interactive like an ice cream or s’mores bar!

  • Tell everyone to BYOB or BYOW (wine) or whatever they choose. If you’d like to provide some provide one type like a certain beer or a signature cocktail, like a Spiked Pomegranate Cooler, to keep cost down.

  • Accept help from friends and don’t take it all on yourself. People love parties and they love to help - so let them. Also enjoy yourself. Have a couple of cocktails and take time to let loose with your friends.

Celebrate the Freshness of Spring!

Spring Coastal Table

Spring is one of our favorite seasons.  While unpredictable as far as the weather is concerned, the freshness of the season just makes you want to smile.  The rains will come but the scent in the air is so clean and refreshing.  It makes everything green up and look alive again after the long days of winter.  Flowers begin to sprout and bloom, leaves begin to bud on trees and thoughts turn to lighter, fresher meals.

At House By The Shore, when we think of cooking a big meal and sharing it with friends, we also begin to think about how we will set and decorate the table.  We’re big believers in pulling everyone around the table and not including those “electronic devices” that tend to plague us all day long.  We stumbled across this divine recipe for Baked Sole fillets which is healthy and uses fresh dill to season it from The Mediterranean Dish blog.  We’re going to pair it with Best Roasted Greek Potatoes also from Suzy Karadsheh and a Shaved Brussels Sprouts & Pecorino Salad from Kendall-Jackson’s blog and Kelsey Boyte.  Kelsey has a blog of her own called Happy Yolks but was a contributor to Kendall-Jackson on this recipe.  We’ve actually had the Jackson Estate Chardonnay 2012 Kelsey recommends and agree with her that it is delightful so we’ll be serving it along with our meal.

Of course since we believe great food deserves a great setting, we pulled together quickly some of our favorites from our entertaining collection!

We’ll pull together a floral centerpiece using some hydrangeas (a favorite of ours) and light some candles.  We’ll probably use 2 or three on each side of the flowers of the ocean blue votive candlestick and the ocean blue seashell hurricanes.  We’ll use our blue crab dinner plates designed by Eastern Shore artisan Jose Davis and our pewter coral handled flatware.  We’ll serve water in the sea drops dark blue hi-ball glasses and the chardonnay in the octopus pewter stem wine glass.  For a little extra seasoning and cute décor, we’ll have our pewter seahorse salt and pepper shakers on the table.  They’ll look great mixed in with the candles and flowers.

Well, off to start cooking - wish you could join us!

Setting a Festive Holiday Table

Festive Coastal Christmas Entertaining!

Last week we gave our secrets to a stress free Christmas on the beach, this week we thought we’d House By The Shore carries a lovely collection of stoneware in a blue crab pattern that we just love.  Now most people may look at these dishes and think they don’t really represent the holidays but we can tell you it just takes some creativity.

cover setting a festive holiday table and some additional ideas for coastal Christmas entertaining.

Just look at what Mary from Home is Where the Boat Is did in a blog post on A Coastal Christmas and Giveaway!  She set a beautiful tablescape for the holidays by using a lovely red stripe quilt as a tablecloth and putting evergreens under the plate.   Add some lanterns festooned with greenery and pretty red ribbon and a sprinkling of shells here and there and you have a lovely coastal Christmas table.

We’ve actually started a Pinterest board for coastal Christmas entertaining and we’ve pinned Mary’s tablescape to it along with some other items we believe are helpful and inspirational.

The take away on setting a Christmas table is you don’t really have to have Christmas dishes to do it.  Just by adding a little greenery, ribbons and a little sparkle you can have a holiday table in no time.  Check out HGTV’s post Create a Coastal-Chic Holiday TableNotice the plain white dishes but with the addition of evergreens, burlap ribbon, shells and pretty ornaments the table is transformed.

You don’t need much to set a festive holiday table for a coastal Christmas.  The prettiest tablescapes are often the ones where you have to be the most creative!
